Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Cinnamomum burmanii supplementation in increasing the CD4+/ CD8+ T lymphocytes ratio. This study was a posttest only control group design. The experimental unit in this study was 39 male Balb/c Mus musculus, which were randomly divided into five groups. The first group of 8 animals was a control group and did not receive treatment. The second group consisted of 8 mice that was given high-intensity exercise regimen and placebo. The third group was treated with 200 mg/kg BW of cinnamon extract without exercise. The fourth and fifth group were given the exercise regimen with different doses of treatment, 100 mg/kg BW and 200 mg/kg BW respectively. The exercise regimen was high intensity training with a load of 80% of maximum ability, namely downhill treadmill with an inclination angle of -15o regularly for 7 days. On the 7th day, four hours after exercise, the spleen of the mice were taken for flowcytometric examination to count the number of cells expressing CD4+ and CD8+. The number of cells expressing T helper lymphocytes (CD4+) showed a significant difference between groups (p = 0.001), with the median value of the control group (11.80±4.17) compared to the fourth (14.93±4.18) and fifth (25.64±12.54) group. There was no significant difference in the number of cells expressing cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8+) between groups (p = 0.562). Likewise, the CD4+/CD8+ ratio did not show any significant difference between groups (p = 0.495). In summary, supplementation in high intensity exercise led to a significant increase (p = 0.001) in the relative number of cells expressing T helper lymphocytes (CD4+) and did not show significant differences in relative CD8+ count and CD4+/CD8+ ratio. © 2021.
